The dragon shot forward like a tightly wound spring cut loose from its binding. Coins and gemstones exploded into the air, scattering in every direction under the force of the beast’s talons. The dragon craned her long neck forward and bellowed forcefully, emitting a deafening, screeching howl that shook the walls of the cavern. Billows of blinding blue and white flames shot forth toward the girl. She leapt out of the way, narrowly escaping the engulfing fire. She rolled into a crouch then sprang forward, sprinting toward the dragon. The colossal beast skidded to a halt and spun quickly toward the girl lashing her enormous, studded tail at her, trying to knock her from her feet. She ducked. The beast’s tail swept over her; the force of the wind produced from the lashing ripped at her clothing. She paused. The dragon drew herself up on her hind legs and fully spread her leathery wings. The scales that lined them shimmered like an aurora; waves of color danced about the length of her wingspan, almost hypnotizing the girl. The dragon bellowed again, craning her neck toward the ceiling. The dragon lowered her head again and pinned the girl in her evil glare. The beast’s enraged eyes burned even brighter than before. She extended her massive claws and came crashing down, fully intent on smashing the girl’s tiny frame. The girl braced herself and firmly gripped the hilt of her sword. Mustering all of her strength, she slammed the blade upward as the mighty serpent threw its weight upon her. In an instant, she felt the monster’s weight bear down on her blade. Her hands felt the coldness of the dragon’s scales as the sword buried itself deep into her broad chest. She collapsed to the floor under the thing, unable to maintain her stance. Unbearable pain washed over her body as she was crushed by the dead weight of the monster. Her eyes dimmed as she began to lose consciousness. The shapes of the cavern and the dragon’s lifeless body slowly faded into shadows. She exhaled deeply and wondered if this moment would be her last.
She snapped to.
“What on earth are you doing up there?!!”
“Getting grandma’s necklace, like you told me to!”
“Well, hurry up, we have to go!”
“OK, MOM! I’m going!”
She jumped up off of the floor and grabbed the tiny chain off of her nightstand. She slowly lifted the necklace in front of her face and ran her thumb and forefinger across the little heart shaped locket before pulling the chain over her head. As she headed out the door of her upstairs bedroom, she looked back quickly, half expecting there to be an enormous dragon heaped up in the middle of her floor. She grinned then ran downstairs to the foyer.
“Why is it that everything takes you so long, missy? I swear; you have to make everything an adventure. And what is with all the commotion? It sounded like you were slaying a dragon or something up there! Did you find my mom’s locket?”
“Yes, ma’am… I got it right here on my neck.”
“Ok, good. Let’s go. We have a long drive to grandma’s house ahead of us today.”
As the travelers made their way down the stone pathway to their horses, the girl began letting her mind wander to a time when she was the old sorceress’s apprentice. She had always been awestricken by the talented old woman’s magical potions and the products of the light-hearted incantations that she allowed her to see from time to time. The queen had moved the sorceress to one of her country haunts several years back after expressing concern for her wellbeing. On occasion, however, she still needed her counsel on matters of her kingdom’s safety. This was one of those occasions. Time was of the essence and it was a long journey…
