This week’s Red Dress Club prompt came with the following instructions: Write a short piece – 600 words max – that begins with the words, “This was absolutely the last time” and ends with “She was wrong.” Have fun with it. Think outside the box. Don’t go with the obvious.
Here’s my take. Constructive criticism is always welcome. Enjoy!
This was absolutely the last time, she told me.
Of course I didn’t believe her. How many times had she said this now? Four? Five? Ten?
It was always the same. She spent too much. She never saved. It was a game to her, but she could not win. I told her she would never win. She begged me to deal with her. I refused…every single time.
The allure of the spending I would never understand.
I was not so obsessive. I never was. I tried to be smart about it—to show her how to be smart about it. She simply couldn’t help herself. She would move from place to place, trying to buy it all. She always ran out of money, but she always came back for more. Her bartering skills simply were not enough to get everything she wanted.
I don’t want to see you do this to yourself again, I told her. You just don’t get it.
I can do it right this time, she claimed. I’m going to beat you, dad!
She was wrong.
