This week, The Red Dress Club prompt continues on the seven deadly sins. Sloth is the target of the week. Fiction or nonfiction, word count of 600 or less. Constructive criticism is always welcomed!
“Did you hear me?” Kate asked sternly.
“Yeah,” Glenn replied without turning his glance from the screen. “You look fine.”
“Why do I bother?” she mumbled as she raced back into the bedroom.
“Yeah…” Glenn was still staring lifelessly into the screen.
Glenn and Kate were not cut from the same cloth. The phrase ‘polar opposites’ rang a little truer than companions in many ways. As of late, however, things had become much worse than anyone would expect—even from them.
No one knew exactly what had caused the severe shift in Glenn’s demeanor, but it was as abrupt as flipping on a light switch first thing in the morning. One day he was quiet, serene, but alive. The next he simply existed—breathing, yet without a pulse.
For almost a month, Kate asked. She prodded. She called friends to try to help shake him from whatever place he had taken root. All of it was to no avail. He stared at the tv most of the time, hardly acknowledging the world, much less the woman he proposed to during a romantic, posh dinner at the LeGrande three months prior.
Kate was getting tired of being ignored. She required attention. This was simply unacceptable. The worst of it being that she wasn’t privy the reasoning behind his shut-down.
She stormed back out of the bedroom.
“Look, enough of this. Tell me what the hell is going on or I am walking out that door.”
She stood, glaring—arms crossed.
She may as well have been transparent.
“Fuck this.” She huffed. She quickly pulled the ring from her finger and threw it at him. Within twenty minutes, she gathered up a suitcase of clothes and essentials. She said nothing as she slammed the front door behind her.
He reached up and slowly rubbed the spot on his cheek where the engagement ring struck him.
“Yeah…” he whispered, his glance not leaving the screen.
